Frequently Asked Questions
Q. What’s going to be different when PetSmart takes over the Super Pet store?
A. Initially, you won’t notice much difference because it will take us some time to fully change over these stores to PetSmart. You’ll still see many, if not all of the same knowledgeable and friendly associates you came to rely on before the stores were sold. The stores will have clearance sales beginning right away and then we’ll re-sign and re-merchandise them to be more consistent with our other stores. Most of this work will be done at night so as to minimize any disruptions to our customers. | back to top |
Q. When does this happen?
A. PetSmart Canada took over ownership of 18 Super Pet stores on June 1; however, they will continue to operate under the Super Pet banner until they are remodeled to be PetSmart stores. The stores will be changed over in staggered, three-week periods over the next three months. We plan to have all of the work done by early September. | back to top |
Q. What will be the biggest difference after the stores are fully changed over to PetSmart?
A. The stores might look slightly different on the inside as we will changes some colours and add signs and shelving that are similar to our other stores. We’ll add a training rink to all stores that don’t already have one and slightly expand the grooming salons. We plan to maintain much of the specialty area (fish, reptiles, birds and small pets) like it is now, but we will expand our product offerings in the dog and cat area. | back to top |
Q. Will the stores close for construction? If so, for how long?
A. We expect the stores to be closed down for only two days during the changeover. Most of our work will be completed during off hours. | back to top |
Q. Will you have a grand opening event when the construction is over?
A. We’ll hold a single grand opening celebration in November for all of the stores. As we get closer to that date, we’ll promote it in our stores and in the local media. | back to top |
Q. Will I still be able to find the pet foods and other products I’m used to buying?
A. Yes, in most cases. In some cases, you’ll have even more variety of products from which to choose. For example, you can expect to see more choices of dog and cat foods and related supplies as we’ll expand our product offering in those areas. We’ll continue to carry Nutrience brand foods as well as PetSmart’s private labels including Authority. | back to top |
Q. Will you continue to sell large birds as well as the other live reptiles, fish and critters that Super Pet carries?
A. We’ll continue to sell the live pets we currently carry. We’re evaluating our options in this area and have not made any final decisions. Until then, it will be business as usual. This is a part of the business in which Super Pet has excelled. We want to learn from that experience and continue to do what’s best for our customers and the business. | back to top |
Q. Will you continue to sell live feeders such as mice, pinkies and rat pups even though your existing stores don’t?
A. Yes, because we realize that many pets have been sold by Super Pet in the past which have been raised to depend on live food. And since we currently plan to continue selling the variety of pets Super Pet has sold, we recognize there will be a continuing need for the sale of live food. Our existing stores will continue to sell this food in frozen form. | back to top |
Q. What about services like grooming and training, will you continue to offer these?
A. Those are areas in which PetSmart excels; we look forward to offering our industry leading grooming and training programs to former Super Pet customers. We plan to expand the number of grooming stations, and accredited dog trainers will offer our popular courses in positive behaviour reinforcement in training rinks that will be installed in the stores. | back to top |
Q. Will groom appointments I set prior to June 1, be honoured after that date?
A. Yes. | back to top |
Q. Will PetSmart retain my pet’s grooming and shot records?
A. Yes. | back to top |
Q. Will you still offer services such as wing clipping and nail clipping for birds even though these services aren’t available in existing PetSmart stores?
A. We’ll continue to offer these services as usual while we learn more. And we’ll explore the possibility of expanding the service to our existing grooming salons and pet care areas. | back to top |
Q. Will any of these stores have a PetsHotel or Doggie Day Camp?
A. Unfortunately, the smaller size of these stores will not accommodate a hotel or day camp. However, the addition of these stores may free up some of our existing, larger stores in the area to incorporate a PetsHotel or Doggie Day Camp. We are in the process of adding two PetsHotels in existing stores in Ottawa, Ont., with the first of those opening this fall. | back to top |
Q. Will I be paying more for PetSmart products?
A. PetSmart and Super Pet prices have been comparable and competitive. PetSmart follows an Every Day Low Price model, which means you’ll continue to receive great value at competitive prices. | back to top |
Q. Can I still use my Super Pet credit card?
A. Holders of these cards have received cancellation notices from HSBC, the card provider, which takes effect June 11. These cards will be accepted in the acquired stores only until then. Existing PetSmart stores cannot accept the cards at all. | back to top |
Q. Can I still use my Super Pet gift card?
A. Yes. These cards will continue to be accepted at the acquired stores, non-acquired stores (PJ’s Pets, Super Pet and Super Pet Express) and even existing PetSmart stores. PetSmart gift cards will become available for sale in the new stores after they are fully converted and re-open as a PetSmart. | back to top |
Q. Can I still use my Frequent Buyer cards (for Nutrience Super Premium Cat Food and Dog Food, Super Mix Cat Litter, Nail Trims and Add-On Spa Package)?
A. Yes. We will continue to accept and redeem these, with the exception of the cat litter offer. We will no longer carry that product, so we’ll offer a product substitution and retain the card. These cards, however, will no longer be available after PetSmart takes ownership of the store. | back to top |
Q. Can I still use Super Pet promotional offers such as coupons out of my Entertainment Book or Student Union Ticket Pak or a Red Adoption Coupon?
A. Yes. We will continue to honour Super Pet coupons and offers in the acquired stores until the offers expire. | back to top |
Q. Does PetSmart provide coupons and offers to customers?
A. Yes. The best way to receive these offers is to sign up for our free PetPerks savings card. You’ll receive great offers via e-mail and direct mail as well as receive advanced e-mail notice of sales, promotions and events and monthly newsletters. In fact, we’ll send you a welcome coupon when you sign up for PetPerks. And if you let us know your pet’s birthday, we’ll mail you a special card to celebrate. You can sign up for PetPerks in our stores once they have re-opened as a PetSmart or in any existing PetSmart store. | back to top |
Q. Will I still be able to adopt pets at your store?
A. Yes. This is a core part of our business. As with all of our other stores, we will continue to offer space and support and partner with local non-profit shelters and rescue organizations to find homes for homeless pets. | back to top |
Q. Will the stores have the same hours and phone number?
A. Store hours will be expanded, opening 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday. This will include our grooming salons. The phone number will remain the same. | back to top |
Q. What will happen to the Super Pet Stores PetSmart didn’t buy?
A. There are only two Super Pet stores (and five Super Pet Express stores) that we didn’t buy. Super Pet will change the name of those stores to PJ’s Pets, and will continue to operate them along with several other PJ’s Pets stores that already exist. | back to top |
Q. Who do I contact if I have a concern or problem?
A. We encourage you to contact your store manager for assistance. He or she will be able to assist you in the vast majority of cases. You also can contact PetSmart Customer Service directly at 1-800-738-1385, ext. 2518. | back to top |
Q. Does PetSmart provide funding or otherwise support local animal welfare groups?
A. Yes. PetSmart Charities Canada, a registered Canada charity, provides funding and support to qualified shelters and animal welfare organizations in its mission to end euthanasia and find loving homes for homeless pets. Charities Canada has provided more than Cdn. $1 million in funding to this cause. Funds raised in Canada are distributed exclusively in Canada. The company also donates retail space in its stores and partners with more than 80 shelters and animal welfare groups to facilitate adoptions of homeless dogs and cats. | back to top |
